| Since 1976, the City of Westland has offered adapted and therapeutic programs for individuals with special needs. These programs are designed for people with a variety of disabilities including cognitive impairments, autism spectrum disorders, emotional impairments, and physical challenges including spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury and more. It is the goal of the Westland Therapeutic Recreation Program to provide a wide variety of recreation and leisure activities for people with special needs. This program was awarded the Michigan Parks and Recreation Association Excellence in Therapeutic Recreation Program Award in 1998 & 2006. For activities that are exclusively sponsored by the Westland Therapeutic Recreation Program, an annual membership is required. Cost of membership is $15 for a non-resident. |

**COOKING CLASS
Learn how to make healthy, low cost meals. The first night the group will make a simple meal, and plan the upcoming menus. Also included is clean up and table setting. At the end of the night each person will take home a copy of the recipe. Bring a recipe to share to the first class, the group may vote to include your special recipe in upcoming menus.

SWIMMING AT THE DYER ORTHOPEDIC POOL
Recreational swimming at the heated Dyer pool provides therapeutic benefits as well as socialization. The temperature of the water is 90 degrees. The locker room and the pool are fully accessible. Those requiring one-on-one assistance or supervision in the pool or locker room must bring an aide or family member. All ages are welcome! Register at the door. Tuesdays, Jan. 6 – June 30, 2010 (Pool closed on February 16, April 6, as well as school holidays, midwinter break, Easter break)
6:30-8 PM Locker rooms open at 6:20 and close at 8:20.

SWIMMING LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS
Adults: Swim lessons for ages 16 and up who are interested in eventually joining the Special Olympic Swim Team. Students are taught using the Red Cross Swim Program. Class is taught by a Water Safety Instructor with lots of swim instruction experience in the Dyer Orthopedic Pool, which is heated to 88 degrees.
Ages: Ages 5 and up. Children under 5 are encouraged to join a parent/child swim class at your local public pool.

Make special arts and crafts projects at these classes. We’ll make many different projects, some of which will be great gifts for Mom or Dad. Please pre-register three days before each session. If you would like to attend only one or two classes, please indicate which days you would like to come. Supplies for your project may not be available if you do not pre-register.

NIGHT FOR ME
Wouldn’t it be great to have a night meeting new friends while having fun? What if you could do all that while your family members spent some time on their own? You would be able to tell them all about the great adventure you had! Each night, we will be going to a special place to do activities. Each night there will be one area set aside for children ages 3-12 and a different area for adults ages 13 and up. Snack provided.
Friday, March 12: 6:00-9:30 p.m.
Activity: Pool party and Rock Climbing Night
Join us for an evening in the pool, then have fun trying to make it to the top of the wall. Snack provided. Please bring a bathing suit, towel, etc. For those who do not wish to go swimming, an alternate activity will be provied.

Activity: Nature programs
Come to the Wayne County Nature Center at Nankin Mills for a wonderful evening of nature programs, crafts and discovery of new spring foliage. We will identify types of trees and plants and what animals eat. Weather permitting, we'll go on a short nature hike with the naturalist, then return to the center for a craft and discussion on what we discovered on our hike. Snack provided. Be ready to discover another season at the Nature Center.

Golf
Learn the basics of golf including chipping, putting, the full swing, etiquette, and rules with golf pro Brian Gabbaert at the Westland Municipal Golf Course. This course will give you teh chance to learn about golf in a friendly environment where you will be able to practice each skill. This course is designed for people with special needs who want to learn at their own pace. No previous experience required. Dress for the weather; program will be outside except when it is raining. In case of rain the program will use the golf simulators inside. Program offered in conjuction with Wayne/Westland Special Olympics Area 23

Therapeutic Cheerleading with Cheer America
Students with special needs will love learning cheer leading routines. This drop in class is great fun and teaches children to do cheer routines safely. The clas will have several opportunities to perform their skills in local parades and competitions. Wear comfortable clothing and sthletic shoes. Children will be provide pom poms, and can earn a uniform if they attend at least 4 classes before the first parade.

T-Ball and Coach Pitch
The next T-Ball/Coach Pitch program will begin in May 20, 2010. Children with special needs are invited to learn the basics of softball at the Westland Therapuetic Recreation T-Ball/Coach Pitch Program. All children are encouraged to participate, regardless of their level of impairment. The head coach is a Certified Recreation Therapist with many years of experience. Program includes skill instruction, practice and one or two inning games every Thursday night. Equipment (except for mitts), team t-shirts and team pot luck picnic provided. Registration deadline is May 1, 2010.
Games/Practice: Thursdays, May 20-July 29 (No program July 1)
All Practices/picnics: Ages 3-7: 6:00-7:00 p.m. Ages 8-12: 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Team Photos: June 3 (cost of photos extra) Team potluck picnic: August 5
Registration with payment required by April 30. (Uniforms will not be available for those who are not registered before the deadline.
Games/practices played at Voss Park (corner of Palmer and Henry Ruff in Westland). If raining, games will move to the Bailey Center Gym located at 36651 Ford Rd, Westland.
Make sure to bring water bottles with water, mitt (optional, but none will be provided), and sunscreen. Please put the child's name on all personal supplies.

Come Join Pack #5714 for special needs boy scouts. Learn new skills, be part of a select group of scouts where activities are adapted just for you.
